About me

What began as a background interest in teenage-hood, has over recent years turned into something of a passion. My first recollection of cameras was the one that belonged to my father and I came to think of it as one of those almost sacred things in the house. As someone whom I looked up to, I thought being able take photographs was an important part of being a grownup - something to aspire to. I also recall the long wait for prints to return to the local pharmacy and the ensuing excitement when the images came back.

It wasn't until years later when I bought my first serious camera prior to going to University, that I took photographs with any kind of regularity. I never considered the activity as an art form, or even a creative, self-expressive endeavour for that matter. I just loved documenting the to-and-fro and special moments of student life.

As time went on, I recall seeing images in an exhibition of wild landscapes, with heaven-sent light which stirred my soul. I encountered for the first time, images on the outside that mirrored my own inner imaginings of what great photography might produce. Out of the blue, photography raised my eyes to the horizon, to a new vision of the landscape which I had never before contemplated. In sum, I was dumbstruck.

And so, a gentle ‘quest’ has ensued in the middle age of my life, sometimes exhilarating, sometimes infuriating but the teacher is gentle. Space has opened up for a search of personal excellence, for friendships, for adventure, not to speak of the welcome capacity to observe and notice. For me, photography has helped me approach the landscape with a sense of reverence and humility.  In the escalating haste of life, this craft has given me a deepened gratitude for the world we live in.

This work is modest, and most certainly a work which is in progress. With the encouragement of friends and family, I've decided to take the step to exhibit my work more widely and see what may come from this sharing. Such a move garner's both excitement and apprehension and is quite outside my natural comfort zone but I feel that the time is right to take that step.

Enjoy.
